These two factors are the keys to a prince's success. Nonetheless, for Machiavelli, fortune is a force to be utilized if favorable and overcome if not.įortune 2: In defining principalities, Machiavelli identifies two main ways a prince can gain power-through fortune or ability. Perhaps Machiavelli was appealing to Lorenzo de' Medici in hopes that he would be offered a position in the Medici government. On the other hand, fortune has reduced Machiavelli from a once significant political official to a poor day laborer. He believes that the prince can achieve greatness because of his fortune and abilities. There is a strong sense of irony in Machiavelli's mention of fortune. The other message is subtle-he wants the prince to know how much he is suffering because of his unfortunate circumstances. The first is straightforward-he wants Lorenzo de' Medici to read and consider his work because it will bring the prince honor and glory. Fortune 1: In the dedication, Machiavelli expresses two main objectives. But what is especially fascinating about Michael Moss's new book is its strict adherence to its subtitle. To be fair, though, the groundwork does need to be laid, and the basics have to be stated again, in order for Salt Sugar Fat to work. Mostly I was afraid it would regurgitate material I had heard many times before and initially it does. The absolutely brilliant Salt Sugar Fat: How the Food Giants Hooked Us is a well-researched and well-reported book that despite its loaded subject, doesn't sound preachy and never wags its finger at you, the end-consumer.Īs someone who has read all of Michael Pollan's books and religiously followed Mark Bittman's food columns in The New York Times, I picked up this book rather hesitantly. Mostly plants." You don't really need to read another killjoy volume, you think. "Yes," you say, "I know that too much salt, sugar and fat are bad for me." After all, you've probably at least come across Michael Pollan's commandment: "Eat food. It shows us how the food giants play the game and in doing so, it's a masterful work of high-quality reporting. What is especially fascinating about Michael Moss' new book is its strict adherence to its subtitle. The naration isn't bad but the volume dips at times or that might jsut be me. The information is detailed and pulls no punches. Man's law and god's law and which is best to follow is one question which this book does make one ask oneself. Men are men and they do things fort which they should be punished and are not. Some might be horrified that the church could actually seek to cover up such crimes but that's for them to feel. The book contains everything about the scandal that rocked a faith and church over the decades though to me it was not shocking or surprising at all. However this is areview and not a religious debate and so I'll leave that to those more studious in such matters to conjecture. In fact through his bishops such behaviour is condoned. Reading this book one might suggest that it is the ultimate proof that god does not exist since even those ordained in his name are corrupt and god does nothing about it. Don't believe the church and state and everything they tell you Some were caricatures while others were barely there. Writing in The Guardian, Euan Ferguson said: "It was a mess: ill-plotted, playing bits for laughs or for horror without ever achieving either." Anita Singh of The Daily Telegraph gave the show 2 out of 5 stars, writing: "All of the characters' behavior felt a little weird, and it was not clear if that was by accident or design. Drawing theoretical insights from Rosemarie Thomson, Cathy Caruth, and Judith Butler among others, the paper explores the process of the autodiegetic narrator’s retelling, retracing, and recollecting a traumatic past. This paper is an attempt to read the novel’s depiction of trauma and the body, and the nuanced psyche of stigmatisation through the lens of trauma psychology and disability studies, and to read home as a space not of security, but of horror. Dolores’s disfigured hand as the object of stigmatisation ushers a series of corporeal and verbal abuse. The concept of “trauma” in this paper encompasses an individual’s suffering, and in doing so, the paper attempts to read the nuances of traumatic and post traumatic psychology. Trezza Azzopardi’s The Hiding Place (2000) is a novel about traumatic childhood experiences in the familial context, within the home. |
